Artist of the Year Award

October 7 2019

After extensive scrutiny of drawings presented by over 50 artists, the panel finally took a grim decision to identify the ultimate winner. The process of coming up with the decision was further complicated by the great quality of work displayed by participants. Nonetheless, Prince Ncube, an accountant by profession ran away with the crown as his pencil drawing of the 'God's plan' hitmaker did enough to wow the spectators.

Africanicity

February 19, 2020

Ever wondered if art can flourish and be fully appreciated without a glimmer of Africa? Well don't even go there. Africa's diverse flora, fauna and culture are like that last teaspoon of sugar you need to make your tea tasty. As we all know, "art speaks where words can't explain". This silent explanation was brought to us by non other than the exceptionally talented Bulawayo-born Sheppard Gumpo who, during the interview with our editor, vowed to stop at nothing to express Africa's beauty to the world. The art sensation described his talent as rooted and natured at Mzilikazi Arts and Crafts Centre before working for Penzo Zimbabwe doing fine art in ceramics.Much to our surprise, the above artwork was Gumpo's least valued  piece and was painted on a casual trip to the Matopos, situated in Matebeleland South. The country site boasts of the UNESCO recognition as a world heritage site, a declaration by the British African emperor Rhodes as the mother of The View of the World, and most importantly, it is in this natural beauty where the Ndebele National Shrine, Njelele is housed; a combination of beauty and culture with a subsequent gorgeous awe from which the work was inspired.  The South African-based artist is a 'Jack of all trades' in the art industry as he boasts a great range of work from wall paintings, pencil drawings and sculptures, to cloth and ware paintings. Color brings life to art. Africa is color.

There's Just Something About the Woman!

6 May 2020

In an interview with the painter, Ntando Masuku, she described to us what her aesthetic piece of marvellous art meant:   _"This is beautiful in a    mysterious way; there's something about the woman that intrigues everyone... she holds the world in her eyes, as you can see they look like the earth. She somehow looks like she's got a mask on, yet she embraces who she really is by keeping her natural and curly hair." Well, we got our own interpretation - of this magnificent piece - from the horse itself. Ntando Masuku is an insanely talented figurative painter who, in this case, gave us one elaborate depiction of a strong and elegant woman in allure of other women to hold the brush firm and paint their strengths. She presents women as powerful beings with whom the earth was blessed. It's a well known phenomenon that there are traditional days, and in some cases months, set aside in our calenders in celebration of mother earth's most beautiful inhabitants, women. Unfortunately, the calender not only possess celebratory moments for these fragile fellow creatures, but also activism and awareness campaigns, the most shameful being directed towards  gender based violence. Oops! Looks like the florist is plucking out the petals of his own roses. The precious species is endangered. There seems to be some nincompoops, misguided elements, masquerading in trousers as men whilst actually disgracing  the whole mankind, who need to be constantly reminded of the importance of our women. 'Wathinta Umfazi Wathinta Imbokodo.' A Ndebele proverb will warn you. Translated to 'Don't you dare touch women!' The Bulawayo-born enthusiastic artist was quick to vociferously  rubberstamp the message with vigour, vitality and umph through her high calibre painting of a chromatic beautiful woman. Engineered in the City of Nicosia in Cyprus, the flabagasting setpiece took more than a fortnight to accomplish.  On the material of the portrait, the Nursing undergraduate said,  "The woman has got history around her neck, that's rice painted with acrylic paint .." (chuckles) then continues "In a world where there is so much confusion and disruption,   showcased by the dimensional circles." Masuku did not only clear the enigma surrounding the painting but also fired warning shots to those undermining the power of women. The former Petra High student is open for interaction with like-minded artists and admirers through her Instagram page Ntando_Masuku.
