Africanicity

February 20, 2020

Ever wondered if art can flourish and be fully appreciated without a glimmer of Africa? Well don't even go there. Africa's diverse flora, fauna and culture are like that last teaspoon of sugar you need to make your tea tasty. As we all know, "art speaks where words can't explain". This silent explanation was brought to us by non other than the exceptionally talented Bulawayo-born Sheppard Gumpo who, during the interview with our editor, vowed to stop at nothing to express Africa's beauty to the world. Much to our surprise, the above artwork was Gumpo's least valued  piece and was painted on a casual trip to the Matopos, situated in Matebeleland South in Zimbabwe. The country site boasts of the UNESCO recognition as a world heritage site, a declaration by the British African emperor Rhodes as the mother of View of the World, and most importantly, it is in this natural beauty where the Ndebele National Shrine, Njelele is housed; a combination of beauty and culture with a subsequent gorgeous awe from which the work was inspired.  The South African-based artist is a 'Jack of all trades' in the art industry as he boasts a great range of work from wall paintings, pencil drawings and sculptures, to cloth and ware paintings. Color brings life to art. Africa is color.
